Perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette: the real differences
By Atyab
Extrait, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de Cologne: these terms describe one thing, the concentration of aromatic compounds. Everything else — longevity, sillage, price — follows from this.
The four concentrations
| Term | Indicative concentration | Average longevity |
|---|---|---|
| Extrait de parfum | 20 to 40% | 8 to 12 hours |
| Eau de parfum | 12 to 20% | 5 to 8 hours |
| Eau de toilette | 5 to 12% | 3 to 5 hours |
| Eau de Cologne | 2 to 5% | 1 to 2 hours |
These ranges are indicative: no international regulations define them strictly. A house may call a composition at 14% an "eau de parfum," just as it could a 19% composition.
Concentration isn't everything
This is the point that comparison charts systematically overlook. Two factors weigh as much as the percentage.
The nature of the ingredients
A citrus scent evaporates in a few dozen minutes, regardless of the concentration. Patchouli or oud will last an entire day, even at low doses. A woody eau de toilette can therefore last longer than a citrusy eau de parfum.
The skin that wears it
Oily skin retains aromatic molecules better than dry skin. For the same perfume, the difference in longevity between two people easily reaches two to three hours.
The case of Gulf perfumery
Middle Eastern houses work almost exclusively with eau de parfum, with concentrations often found at the high end of the range. This explains the reputation for longevity of Arabian perfumes — and why one should use one spray instead of three.
Add to this base notes built on heavy materials — amber, oud, musk, vanilla — and you get a sillage that lasts all day. See, for example, Reef Niche 1 or Reef 31.
What to choose based on use
- Office, enclosed spaces — a musky or floral eau de parfum, one spray. For example, Reef Pure Flower.
- Daytime, outdoors — a fruity or fresh woody scent, two sprays. For example, Reef Pure Fruity.
- Evening, cold season — an amber, leather, or gourmand scent. For example, Reef Niche 6.
Frequently asked questions
Is an eau de parfum always better than an eau de toilette?
No. It is more concentrated, and therefore more persistent — which is not always desirable. In summer or at the office, a lower concentration is often more comfortable.
Why does my perfume only last two hours?
Often because it relies on fresh notes, or because your skin is dry. Apply to hydrated skin and spray on fabric as well.
Are all Gulf perfumes highly concentrated?
Mostly, yes. It is a characteristic of this perfumery, not an exception.
