Saffron in perfumery: the signature ingredient of the Gulf

By Atyab

If one ingredient were to sum up Gulf perfumery, it would be saffron. It is found in one out of every three compositions, and is often enough to give a perfume its oriental accent.

What does saffron smell like?

It has nothing to do with culinary use. In perfumery, saffron is leathery, dry, slightly medicinal, with a hint of iodine and a subtle bitterness. It is not sweet: it provides depth and immediate tension right from the opening.

It is this controlled hardness that prevents oriental compositions from turning sugary.

Natural or reconstituted?

Natural saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world—it takes about 150,000 flowers to make one kilo. In perfumery, it is therefore almost always combined with synthetic molecules like safranal, which reproduce its leathery facet at a sustainable cost.

What saffron works well with

  • With oud — the most classic pairing. Saffron opens, oud closes. See Reef 33 and Reef Diriyah.
  • With red fruits — the fruity/leathery contrast is one of the great modern signatures. See Reef 33 White.
  • With amber and vanilla — saffron prevents the base from becoming mawkish. See Reef 31.
  • With leather and caramel — for the most concentrated compositions, such as Reef Niche 1.

How to recognize a saffron perfume

Three clues: an opening that "stings" slightly without being fresh, an impression of leather even before leather appears in the pyramid, and high persistence from the very first minutes.

For whom?

Saffron is suitable for those who find fresh perfumes too smooth and gourmand ones too sweet. It is a material with character, but widespread enough to never seem eccentric.

Our saffron selection is grouped together in the spicy perfumes collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is saffron a masculine note?

No. In Gulf perfumery, it is worn by everyone. Its pairings—rose, red fruits, amber—actually make it very versatile.

What is the difference between saffron and leather?

Saffron evokes leather without being it: it is drier, spicier, less animalic. For real leather, see our leather perfumes.

Does a saffron perfume last a long time?

Generally yes, because saffron is almost always combined with woody or amber bases that are very long-lasting.
