Musk: white, animalic, oriental — how to navigate it
By Atyab
Musk is the most used material in perfumery and the least understood. Almost all perfumes contain it; almost no one could describe it.
A material that no longer exists in its original form
Musk originally referred to an animal secretion from the musk deer. This source has been banned for decades. Musk in contemporary perfumery is entirely synthetic or of plant origin—and that is good news: modern molecules are more stable, cleaner, and infinitely more varied.
Three main families of musk
White musk
The most common. Clean, powdery, soft, slightly soapy. It is the scent associated with fresh laundry. It is never overpowering: it envelops.
Example: Reef 19 — lily of the valley, jasmine, white musk.
Fruity musk
A white musk warmed by fruit notes, very common in Gulf perfumery. More radiant, more immediate.
Example: Reef Pure Musk — passion fruit, abaca, musk.
Oriental musk
Musk combined with saffron, leather, or resins. It loses its transparency and gains depth.
Example: Reef Summer Tiffany — mandarin, peach, musk.
Why you don't always "smell" musk
A portion of the population has partial anosmia to certain musk molecules: they do not perceive them, or only very faintly. If a musky perfume seems to disappear on you in an hour while those around you can smell it perfectly, this is likely the explanation.
This is also what makes musk's strength: it is perceived by others far more than by the person wearing it.
For whom?
Musk is the safest choice in three situations: a first oriental perfume, an office perfume, and a gift when you do not know the person's tastes precisely. It offends no one and can be worn all year round.
