Olfactory families explained simply

By Atyab

An olfactory family is not a marketing category: it is the dominant material in a composition, the one that gives a perfume its character. Knowing eight of them is enough to navigate any catalog.

Woody

Sandalwood, cedar, guaiac, vetiver, patchouli. This is the largest and most stable family: it provides longevity. Dry and elegant, it can be worn all year round.

For whom: those who want a sober and lasting signature.
Example: Reef Arabs of AlUla — see the collection.

Floral

Rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, orange blossom, ylang-ylang. In Oriental perfumery, the flower is rarely alone: it rests on a woody or amber base that prevents it from turning into just a bouquet.

For whom: those looking for radiance without sacrificing longevity.
Example: Reef 36 — see the collection.

Fruity

Peach, pear, pineapple, blackcurrant, red berries. The sparkle of the first spray. Almost always an opening, rarely a complete signature.

For whom: beginners, or those who want an easy daytime perfume.
Example: Reef 42 — see the collection.

Amber

Labdanum, benzoin, resins, vanilla. This is not a material but an accord, and it is the most recognizable signature of Arabian perfumery: warm, powdery, enveloping.

For whom: those who love perfumes with character, in cold weather.
Example: Reef 31 — see the collection.

Musky

The family closest to the skin. It does not impose itself; it settles in — often better perceived by those around you than by the person wearing it.

For whom: the office, everyday life, and gifts when you don't know the person's tastes.
Example: Reef Pure Musk — see the collection.

Spicy

Saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, pink pepper, ginger. This is what most clearly distinguishes an Oriental perfume from a Western one: depth from the very first seconds.

For whom: those who find fresh perfumes too flat.
Example: Reef 30 — see the collection.

Gourmand

Vanilla, caramel, praline, honey, tonka bean. The most identifiable sillage, often the most tenacious. In Gulf perfumery, it is always tempered by spices or woods.

For whom: autumn and winter evenings.
Example: Reef Titan — see the collection.

Leather

The most assertive family. Dry, smoky, sometimes animalic. It does not seek to please immediately.

For whom: those who have explored classic woody scents and are looking for more.
Example: Reef Niche 2 — see the collection.

Frequently asked questions

Does a perfume belong to only one family?

Almost never. Most compositions combine two or three. On Atyab, each product page indicates all the families involved.

How do I know which family suits me?

Start with the perfume you already wear and identify its dominant note: it is the most reliable starting point.
