Sandalwood, the backbone of woody fragrances

By Atyab

Sandalwood is to perfumery what a stock base is to cooking: rarely highlighted, almost always present, and essential to the balance of the whole.

What does sandalwood smell like?

Creamy, milky, slightly sweet, with a powdery facet. Unlike cedar, which is dry and sharp, sandalwood is round and enveloping. It is a wood that never bites.

Its discretion is deceptive: it lasts an extremely long time and fixes the more volatile materials layered on top of it.

Mysore, Australia, New Caledonia

Mysore sandalwood, from India, is the historical benchmark. Its overexploitation has led to strict regulation and a very high price. Contemporary perfumery mainly uses Australian sandalwood — which is clearer and a bit drier — and high-quality synthetic reconstitutions.

Why it is everywhere

Sandalwood fulfills three functions on its own:

  1. It fixes — it retains volatile molecules and extends the longevity of the entire composition.
  2. It softens — it rounds out spices and leathers, which would otherwise be abrupt.
  3. It binds — it holds together materials that would have no business being side by side.

Sandalwood in Gulf perfumery

It is found mainly as a base note, supporting a flower or a spice. Reef Summer Pink combines it with pear and amber; Reef Tuwaiq and Reef 36 illustrate the same floral logic placed on wood.

It is also the natural partner of oud, whose animalic aspect it tempers — see our oud perfumes.

For whom?

Sandalwood is suitable for those who want a long-lasting perfume without a demonstrative sillage. It is the most consensual material in the woody family: it offends no one and can be worn from the office to an evening out.

Frequently asked questions

Sandalwood and cedar, how to tell them apart?

Cedar is dry, chalky, and a bit sharp. Sandalwood is creamy and milky. Smell a sharpened pencil for cedar, and rice pudding for sandalwood.

Is sandalwood suitable for summer?

Yes, especially when combined with white flowers or citrus fruits. It does not weigh down.

How do I know if a perfume contains sandalwood?

Check its pyramid on the product page: we publish the top, heart, and base notes as communicated by the fragrance houses.
